How this works: QuickTruckTax helps you understand, prepare, and validate your filing. We are not a filing service and never submit forms on your behalf — you always do the final review and submission. Figures here are estimates for guidance only and are not legal or tax advice. How Form 2290 tax works

How is the HVUT calculated?

Vehicles at 55,000 lbs taxable gross weight owe $100, plus $22 for each 1,000 lbs over 55,000, capped at $550 for 75,000 lbs and above. Logging vehicles pay reduced rates.

What if I started using the truck mid-year?

HVUT is prorated based on the first month the vehicle was used on public highways during the July–June tax period. The calculator handles this automatically.

What is a suspended vehicle?

A vehicle expected to travel 5,000 miles or fewer (7,500 for agricultural) in the period is 'suspended' (Category W). You still file Form 2290 to report it, but $0 tax is due.
