Moving Your Trucking Company to Another State
✦ The quick answer
When your base state changes, you open new IRP and IFTA accounts in the new state (you need an established place of business there) and close the old ones, update your address with FMCSA through an MCS-150 update and with the IRS on Form 8822-B, and check the new state's own rules — intrastate USDOT requirements, state operating authority, and weight-distance taxes like Oregon's, New Mexico's, Kentucky's, New York's or Connecticut's.

What to do
- 1Establish your place of business in the new state. IRP and IFTA base jurisdictions require an established place of business, records and vehicles based there.
- 2Open new IRP and IFTA accounts, then close the old ones. Coordinate the dates so your trucks are never without valid credentials, and file the final IFTA return in the old state.
- 3Update FMCSA. File an MCS-150 update in Motus with your new address.
- 4Update the IRS. File Form 8822-B so notices about your 2290 and business taxes reach you, and use the new address on your next Form 2290.
- 5Check the new state's rules. Some states require USDOT numbers for intrastate carriers, run their own operating authority (Texas, for example), or charge weight-distance taxes.
- 6UCR carries on. Your UCR registration follows your USDOT number; just make sure your MCS-150 is current before next year's registration.
Watch out
Letting the old base-state IRP plates lapse before the new ones are issued parks the fleet. Overlap the transition rather than leaving a gap.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need new plates when I move states?+
Yes — IRP apportioned plates come from your base jurisdiction, so a new base state issues new plates and cab cards. Some states let you run on the old ones for a short transition; ask both offices.
What happens to my IFTA license?+
You apply for a new license in the new base state and cancel the old one with a final return. Keep your mileage and fuel records continuous.
Does my USDOT number change?+
No. You update your address on the MCS-150; the USDOT number stays the same.
