Your Form 2290 was rejected. Here's exactly why.

A rejection is not a penalty and not a late filing — the return simply never went through. Paste the code from your provider's email and get the cause, the fix, and how long it takes.

All 5 documented rejections

Your EIN and business name don't match IRS records

The IRS checks your EIN against the first four characters of the business name exactly as it was recorded when the EIN was issued — the 'name control'. If your filing says anything else, the return is rejected. This is the single most common 2290 rejection, and it is almost never a typo in the EIN itself; it is the business name being spelled differently from the IRS's copy.

What to do
  1. 1Find your name control on your CP575 — the EIN assignment letter the IRS sent when the EIN was issued. It is the authoritative record.
  2. 2Lost the CP575? The IRS will not reissue it, but it will send a 147C letter, which serves the same purpose. Call the Business & Specialty Tax Line on 800-829-4933.
  3. 3Check the derivation rules below — 'The Willow Co.' and 'The Hawthorn' produce different name controls, and that catches people out.
  4. 4Fix the business name in your filing to match, then resubmit. Do not change the EIN unless you know it is wrong.

Minutes if you have the CP575. Up to two weeks if you need a 147C letter posted to you, though the agent can often read the name control to you on the call.

The bank routing number is invalid

You chose to pay the tax by direct debit and the routing number failed validation. The IRS rejects the whole return, not just the payment — so the filing does not exist until you resubmit.

What to do
  1. 1Check the 9-digit routing number against a cheque or your bank's own published ABA number. The number printed on a deposit slip is often NOT the one for electronic payments.
  2. 2Confirm the account is a chequing account that accepts ACH debits.
  3. 3Resubmit. If it fails again, switch the payment method to EFTPS or a card and file — you can pay separately without holding up the Schedule 1.

The provider's EFIN isn't recognised — this one isn't yours to fix

The Electronic Filing Identification Number belongs to the e-file provider, not to you. This rejection means their EFIN is not in the IRS database, or is expired, deactivated, or not yet accepted. Nothing about your return is wrong.

What to do
  1. 1Contact whoever you filed through and quote the code. They have to resolve it with the IRS e-Help Desk.
  2. 2If they cannot fix it quickly and your deadline is close, file through a different provider from the IRS's published list. Your return is not on file until one is accepted, so switching costs you nothing but the new provider's fee.

Out of your hands. Hours to days, depending on the provider.

You reported additional tax but didn't tick 'Amended Return'

Part I line 3 carries additional tax from an increase in taxable gross weight. If that line is not zero, the return has to be marked as an amended return. The IRS rejects the mismatch rather than guessing.

What to do
  1. 1If the weight really did increase, tick the Amended Return box and resubmit.
  2. 2If you entered a figure on line 3 by mistake — a common slip when a first return is being filed — clear it and resubmit as an ordinary return.

New EIN, too soonIRS source ↗

The EIN is too new to be in the e-file system yet

A newly issued EIN exists immediately for some purposes but is not loaded into the e-file database straight away. Filing before it lands produces a mismatch rejection even though every detail you entered is correct.

What to do
  1. 1Use the calculator below to see the date the IRS's own guidance points to.
  2. 2If the 2290 deadline falls inside the waiting window, file anyway as the date approaches and keep resubmitting — the return is only late if it is never accepted. Paying on time and having the return accepted late is a far better position than not filing.
  3. 3Do not apply for a second EIN to get around this. It creates a duplicate-entity problem that is much harder to unwind than waiting.

The IRS says to allow four weeks. Providers commonly say 10–15 business days. See the conflict note — plan for four weeks and try earlier.

Sources disagree — here's both

The IRS says on its own e-file Form 2290 page: "allow four weeks for your new EIN to be established in our systems before filing your Form 2290." Several large e-file providers tell customers 10–15 business days. We quote the IRS figure because it is the primary source and the longer of the two — but plenty of people do get accepted sooner, so it is worth retrying before four weeks is up.

How your name control is worked out

The IRS builds your name control from the legal name on your Form SS-4 when the EIN is issued. Only two symbols survive — the ampersand and the hyphen — and everything else is dropped. These are the IRS's own worked examples.

Business nameName controlWhy
Sumac Field Plow Inc.SUMAFirst four characters of the legal name. 'Inc.' is ignored.
11th Street Inc.11THNumbers count as characters.
P & P CompanyP&PCThe ampersand is kept — it is one of only two allowed symbols.
Y-Z Drive CoY-ZDThe hyphen is kept, and it is the other allowed symbol.
John Hackberry PAJOHNSole proprietor: the individual's name, not the practice suffix.
ELMELMFewer than four characters is valid — it is not padded.
OAK! TreeOAKTInvalid characters are dropped, then four are taken from what remains.
The Willow Co.WILL'The' is DROPPED when more than one word follows it.
The HawthornTHEH'The' is KEPT when only one word follows. This pair trips most people up.

New EIN? Work out when you can actually file

A brand-new EIN is not in the e-file system straight away, and filing too early produces a mismatch rejection even when every detail is right. This works out the date from the IRS's own guidance, and tells you whether it lands before your deadline.

Questions

›Why was my Form 2290 rejected?

By far the most common reason is that the EIN and the business name do not match IRS records — the 'name control' check. Other frequent causes are an invalid bank routing number, an EIN too newly issued to be in the e-file system, and reporting additional tax without ticking the Amended Return box.

›Does it cost anything to refile a rejected 2290?

No. A rejected return was never filed, so there is nothing to amend and no penalty for the rejection itself. Most e-file providers let you resubmit a rejected return at no extra charge. What matters is getting an accepted return before the deadline.

›What is a name control on Form 2290?

It is the first four characters of your business name exactly as the IRS recorded it when your EIN was issued, derived from the legal name on your Form SS-4. The IRS states that your e-file name control must match your EIN name. It appears on your CP575 EIN assignment letter.

›I lost my CP575 — how do I find my name control?

The IRS does not reissue the CP575, but it will issue a 147C letter which serves the same purpose. Call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line on 800-829-4933. The agent can often confirm the name control on the call.

›How long after getting an EIN can I file Form 2290?

The IRS says to allow four weeks for a new EIN to be established in its systems before filing Form 2290. Many e-file providers tell customers 10 to 15 business days. Plan for four weeks but try sooner, and keep retrying if a deadline is close.

›Am I late if my 2290 was rejected before the deadline?

A rejected return is not a filed return, so what counts is having an accepted return. If a rejection is fixed and accepted promptly there is normally no issue, but you should resubmit as quickly as you can rather than waiting.

We can't refile it for you — and nobody should pretend otherwise

The IRS requires Form 2290 to be e-filed through one of its authorised providers, and states you cannot e-file it on IRS.gov. Fix the cause above and resubmit through whoever you filed with. What we can do is make sure nothing else is about to catch you out.
