Form 2290 November Due Date: Who Files by November 30 (and Why)

Most truckers know the big August 31 deadline, but plenty have a November one — and it catches people off guard. Here's exactly who files by November 30 and what they owe.
Quick answer
Form 2290 is due the last day of the month after your truck's first use on a public highway. So a November due date (November 30) applies to a vehicle first used in October. The tax is prorated for the months remaining in the July–June tax period — not the full annual amount.
Why your deadline is November, not August
The HVUT period runs July 1 – June 30. The August 31 deadline only covers trucks already in service in July. If you put a truck on the road in October — bought it, registered it, or first drove it then — your clock starts in October, and your filing is due November 30.
| First used | 2290 due | Tax |
| --- | --- | --- |
| July | August 31 | Full year |
| September | November 2 (Oct 31 + weekend roll) | Prorated |
| October | November 30 | Prorated (9/12) |
| November | December 31 | Prorated (8/12) |
How much you owe for an October first use
The tax is prorated by the months left in the period. With an October first use, 9 of the 12 months remain, so you pay 9/12 of the annual amount:
- An 80,000 lb truck (annual $550) owes about $413.
- A 55,000 lb truck (annual $100) owes about $75.
The Form 2290 calculator computes your exact prorated figure when you enter your weight and first-use month.
What you need to file by November 30
- Your EIN (not an SSN — and a brand-new EIN needs about two weeks to activate for e-filing).
- The VIN of the vehicle.
- The taxable gross weight category.
E-file and your stamped Schedule 1 comes back within minutes — you'll need it to register the truck with your state.
Miss November 30?
Penalties accrue monthly (about 4.5% of the tax per month, up to five months, plus interest), and without a current Schedule 1 your state won't issue plates. If you've already missed it, file immediately — even a few days saves a full month's penalty.
Don't confuse this with renewal
This November deadline is for a truck's first use mid-year. When the new HVUT period opens the following July, that same truck files again for the full year by August 31. The November filing only covers the current partial period.
