Form 2290 June Due Date: Who Files by June 30 (and Why)

Truckers know the headline August 31 deadline, but Form 2290 due dates actually depend on when your truck was first used. Here's the June deadline explained.

Quick answer

Form 2290 is due the last day of the month after your truck's first use. So a June due date (June 30) applies to a vehicle first used in May. The tax is prorated to 2/12 of the annual amount — not the full year.

Why your deadline is June, not August

The HVUT period runs July 1 – June 30, and the August 31 deadline only covers trucks already in service in July. If you first put a truck on the road in May, your clock starts then and the filing is due June 30, with the tax prorated for the months left in the period.

| First used | 2290 due | Tax |

| --- | --- | --- |

| July | August 31 | Full year |

| May | June 30 | Prorated (2/12) |

How much you owe

The tax is 2/12 of the annual amount for your weight category:

  • An 80,000 lb truck (annual $550) owes about $92.
  • A 55,000 lb truck (annual $100) owes about $17.

Use the Form 2290 calculator for your exact figure by weight and May first use.

What you need to file

  • Your EIN (not an SSN — a new EIN takes ~2 weeks to activate for e-filing).
  • The VIN of the vehicle.
  • The taxable gross weight category.

E-file and your stamped Schedule 1 comes back within minutes — you need it to register the truck with your state.

Miss June 30?

Late filing runs about 4.5% of the tax per month (up to five months) plus interest, and without a current Schedule 1 your state won't issue plates. File as soon as you can — even a few days saves a full month's penalty.

Don't confuse this with renewal

This June deadline is for a truck's first use mid-year. When the new HVUT period opens the following July, that truck files again for the full year by August 31.
