Adding a Truck to Your Fleet — What Changes?
✦ The quick answer
When you add a truck: file Form 2290 for it by the last day of the month after its first month on the road (if it's 55,000 lbs or more), add it to your IRP account with a supplemental application, order IFTA decals for it, put it on your insurance policy, get its annual inspection on file, and update your MCS-150 power-unit count. Adding trucks can move you into a higher UCR bracket for next year — the brackets break at 3, 6, 21 and 101 power units.

What to do
- 1Form 2290 for the new truck. If it's 55,000 lbs or more taxable gross weight, file for the partial period starting with the month it's first used on public highways. The return is due by the last day of the following month, and the tax is prorated.
- 2Add it to your IRP fleet. File a supplement with your base state to add the truck to your apportioned account; bring the stamped Schedule 1 and title. Use a trip permit until the cab card arrives if you must run interstate before then.
- 3Order IFTA decals. Each qualified truck needs two decals from your base state before it crosses a state line.
- 4Add it to your insurance. Schedule the unit on your auto liability, physical damage and cargo policies before it moves.
- 5Inspection and driver files. Get the prior annual inspection report or inspect it before it works. If a new driver comes with it: pre-employment drug test, full Clearinghouse query and a driver qualification file first.
- 6Update your MCS-150. Reflect the new power-unit count in Motus — it's also what sets next year's UCR bracket.
- 7Check the numbers. Run your cost per mile and profit per truck for the new unit before you sign — the note and insurance have to be covered by that truck's revenue.
Watch out
Crossing a UCR bracket line (2→3, 5→6, 20→21 trucks) raises next year's fee — from $55 to $167 when you go from 2 to 3 power units in 2027. Make sure your MCS-150 count is accurate before you register.

Frequently asked questions
Do I pay the full year of 2290 on a truck I add in the middle of the year?+
No. The tax is prorated from the month the truck is first used on public highways, through June 30. The 2290 calculator does the proration.
Do I have to pay UCR again when I add a truck?+
Your UCR bracket is based on your power units when you register for the year. Adding a truck mid-year typically affects next year's registration — keep your MCS-150 current so the count is right.
Can I move plates from a truck I sold to the new one?+
Many base states allow an IRP plate transfer or replacement vehicle supplement. Ask your IRP office — it can save fees.
